Child Protection Officer (Alternative Care)

About the role

The Child Protection Officer (Alternative Care) will provide technical assistance to the Government of Venezuela and humanitarian partners to strengthen the child protection system following the June 2024 earthquakes. The role focuses on the identification, case management, interim care, family tracing and reunification of unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) in line with international standards and UNICEF core commitments.

Key responsibilities

• Support the development and implementation of child protection protocols and guidelines for alternative care.
• Provide technical assistance to government agencies and NGOs on case management and family tracing.
• Coordinate interim care arrangements and promote family‑based solutions.
• Monitor and report on child protection concerns, ensuring compliance with UNICEF standards.
• Facilitate capacity‑building workshops and training sessions for local partners.
• Assess evolving needs and adapt response strategies in the emergency context.

Required profile

• Proven experience in child protection, preferably in humanitarian emergencies.
• Strong knowledge of international child protection standards and alternative care mechanisms.
• Ability to work collaboratively with government bodies, UN agencies and civil‑society partners.
• Excellent analytical, coordination and reporting skills.

Required skills

• Knowledge of UNICEF core commitments for children in humanitarian action.
• Familiarity with case management tools and family tracing methodologies.
• Understanding of protocols for unaccompanied and separated children.
